Aiding Storm-Ravaged Communities in KS, IA, & OK

The Salvation Army is on the scene in Woodward, OK.

After more than 100 tornadoes passed through Midwest and Plains states within a 24 hour stretch this past weekend, The Salvation Army remains on the scenes of some of the most ravaged towns to help storm survivors pick up the pieces.

Working out of mobile feeding unit bases, The Salvation Army is currently aiding residents in the towns of Wichita, Kansas; Creston, Iowa; Thurman, Iowa; and Woodward, Oklahoma. Emergency Disaster Service crews are providing food, beverages, and emotional and spiritual comfort to all who have been impacted by this disaster.

Here are the updates:

Kansas: In the aftermath of Wichita’s tornadoes, The Salvation Army mobilized quickly by deploying three emergency disaster mobile feeding kitchens (canteens) to provide for first responders, survivors and clean-up crews. Each canteen is capable of feeding thousands of people per day.

An assessment by Wichita officials estimated the loss in the community to be as much as $283 million.

Iowa: In the city of Creston, Salvation Army EDS crews based at a mobile canteen at Trinity Lutheran Church are serving victims, and emergency and clean-up crews with food, beverages and emotional and spiritual care.

Southwest in Thurman, EDS units from Lincoln and Omaha are serving victims and relief workers.

Oklahoma: Salvation Army EDS crews continue to aid survivors in the town of Woodward where a tornado that struck the region after midnight on Sunday morning destroyed 89 homes and 13 businesses.
