Salvation Army Volunteer Among Inspiring Youth Honored by Kevin Spacey at National Award Ceremony
In recognition of Salvation Army Week, we would like to take this chance and highlight two inspiring youth volunteers.
The 18th annual presentation of The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards was held last week at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History in Washington D.C, which honored hundreds of top youth volunteers from across the country. Among those honored, were Nebraska’s Alexandra Baxter, 18, of Omaha and My’Kah Knowlin, 12, of Lincoln for their outstanding volunteer service.
Both girls were awarded $1,000 and congratulated personally by Academy Award winning actor Kevin Spacey and Olympic gold medalist Allyson Felix, as well as given other prizes!
Since she was a child, Alexandra has volunteered with her local Salvation Army by ringing our well-known red kettle bells during the holiday season. In 2010, Alexandra took her two passions, running and volunteering and created the fall charity, Red Kettle 5K Run. This charity event has resulted in the collection of over 80,000 cans of food for The Salvation Army’s food pantries in preparation for the overwhelming demand during the holiday season.
As of last year, Alexandra’s Kettle Run has been so successful that it has almost doubled in size. Her first year of throwing the event resulted in 400 runners and approximately 16,000 cans of food collected. This past year, there were almost 900 runners and 44,000 donated food items.
Sixth-grader My’Kah -focused her attention on helping the children affected by the devastating tornados in Joplin, MO, by providing 300 “Boxes of Love” that contained items such as snacks, toys, and other goodies. Like Alexandra, My’Kah also has a history volunteering. At age five, she would request books for her birthday instead of presents so she could donate them to children in need. As of today, she has blessed her community with over 12,000 books for low-income schools.
