The Salvation Army is providing emergency relief assistance in response to those affected by the significant flooding in New York.

Last week, heavy rain fall caused the Mohawk River to overflow its banks damaging houses and forcing residents to flee the area.

The Salvation Army deployed mobile feeding units throughout the state with officers and volunteers providing sandwiches, coffee, donuts, and other food to support residents in recovery.

In Herkimer, an Army mobile feeding unit from Albany provided food for 48 individuals who took shelter at the Herkimer County 911 Center on Friday, which is currently serving as an Emergency Operations Center. The same feeding unit served nearly 300 Herkimer residents at various locations around town this past weekend.

In Mohawk, The Salvation Army in Oneonta mobilized their mobile feeding van and distributed food and cleaning kits. On Sunday morning, they provided food, drinks and clean-up kits, which include products and tools that are helpful in restoring a home or business impacted by water damage.

Today, The Greater New York Division of The Salvation Army will send a Sprinter van equipped to provide hot meals and clean up kits.

“The heavy summer rains that have created severe flooding in PA and NY, tested Salvation Army disaster services already stretched thin by one of the most active years in recent history,” said Mike Orfitelli, Territoral Disaster Services Coordinator at The Salvation Army Eastern Territory. “Gratefully, staff and volunteers are rising to the challenge and providing basic needs and emotional and spiritual care to those impacted.”

The Salvation Army is in need of essentials such as bottled water, granola bars, juice boxes, and other individually packaged food items.
