How You Can Help Feed Families This Holiday Season

The holiday season is nearly upon us, a season of celebration with family, friends and lots of food. This year is an excellent opportunity to start a new (or continuing) tradition of helping out those who may be struggling with matters such as food insecurity.

It’s National Hunger and Homeless Awareness Week (November 16-24), a week dedicated to awareness, education, homelessness, food insecurity, and poverty as it affects those in our community and world.

Each year on the week before Thanksgiving, the National Coalition for the Homeless and the National Student Campaign Against Hunger and Homelessness co-sponsor National Hunger and Homeless Awareness Week.

Last year, according to the National Coalition for the Homeless, “6.4 million households skipped meals multiple times and ate much less than they were used to”.

The Salvation Army recognizes the severity of this issue and has long been dedicated to helping families meet this basic need. This is why our food pantries, which provide groceries for individuals and families in need, are so crucial in helping us combat food insecurity.

At many locations, the pantry supply is running critically low. And with government cuts on food assistance for low-income individuals, the demand for goods at our food pantries will likely sky-rocket.

But the good news is that you can make a huge difference! In the spirit of thankfulness and giving, please consider the opportunity to help us ensure tables don’t go bare and those less fortunate have enough to eat. You can provide food – and a holiday meal – for a family in need with just a few donated cans.

Small donations such as this add up fast: With the help of donations last year, The Salvation Army served over 58 million meals to individuals in need through food service at pantries, shelters and by home deliveries.

If you’d like to donate a bag of nonperishable foods to your local Salvation Army food pantry, check out our main website for a list of locations near you:  www.SalvationArmyUSA.org.

  1. Hi, I would like to help serve food for those in need during these times during the holidays. I don’t have much either but I would like to volunteer my time when I am off to help out. I just don’t know where to help and when I can help. I live in Montgomery, AL. Please let me know any places and times that are available for me to provide service for! Thank you very much!

    Sincerely,
    Ramona B.
