Suffering throughout the world is a sad reality. Outside of the light of Christ, it’s easy to understand why some people attempt to squander feelings of depression and hopelessness by fueling their addictions.

Every day and by your help, employees of The Salvation Army Adult Rehabilitation Centers experience the joy of witnessing the transformation of these individuals. From darkness to light; dependency to sobriety, those who once had nothing now have everything because they have discovered faith and hope through their new life in Christ.

One Person’s Treasure is Another Person’s…

Friday, October 14, 2011

“These rubies are from Burma – they were brought to the U.S. before the ‘Burma Trade Act’ and are legal – they are very high quality and are worth a lot of money. Please use the funds obtained from them to help others in the name of Jesus Christ. Hopefully bringing others to know him. Thank you for your good Christian work. – A Friend in Christ”

Talk about a rare donation! The Salvation Army of Springfield, Missouri received the above note with two Burmese rubies from an anonymous donor last week. Burma rubies typically vary in price anywhere from $8,000 – $100,000. We are thankful for this person’s generosity!

Though unconventional, this isn’t the strangest. In fact, when Googling ‘Weirdest Charity Store Donations’ (yes, we did that), the word ‘valuable’ becomes a rather subjective term. The absolute strangest include a prosthetic leg, sacks of potatoes, a bird’s nest, a bag of human hair, and a coffin. Funniest one: A personal diary with entries – like reality TV before TV was invented!

While your local Salvation Army thrift store probably isn’t looking for any bird’s nests or potatoes, they ARE in need of your coats, as the temperature continues to drop, as well as other clothes, furniture and household goods. Please contact your local Salvation Army to hear hours and methods for how you can help those in need.

There are many ways to donate to The Salvation Army. To learn more, please visit www.donate.salvationarmyusa.org.

Thank You Crystal Cruises!

Wednesday, August 17, 2011

Well-known luxury cruise line Crystal Cruises donated a whopping 900 items to The Salvation Army of New Jersey this summer! Donated items included furniture and television sets that remained after the renovation of two cruise ships.

A cornerstone of Crystal Cruises’ culture is its genuine hospitality and service that has been internationally celebrated for two decades. This spirit of generosity extends to its respectful treatment of the environment, oceans and communities in which it travels.

And thankfully, that spirit of generosity has flowed directly to The Salvation Army!

The donation was split among several Salvation Army Family Thrift Stores in the Newark, NJ area where the items were quickly sold. While some items were given directly to families in need, others were sold at reasonable prices to those who can’t afford retail. All donations given to The Salvation Army Thrift Stores support our Adult Rehabilitation Centers.

The Salvation Army’s Adult Rehabilitation Centers provide spiritual, social, and emotional assistance for those who have lost the ability to cope with their problems and provide for themselves. There are over 100 centers across the country, each offering housing, work, and therapy in a clean, wholesome environment. Program participants receive spiritual and physical care, preparing them to re-enter society and return to gainful employment. Many of those who have been rehabilitated are reunited with their families and resume normal life.

The Salvation Army is so thankful for the generosity of our donors from all over the world!

Extreme Makeover: Salvation Army Edition

Tuesday, August 9, 2011

The Salvation Army of Carlisle, PA received a fabulous makeover thanks to one hard-working high school Senior. After months of planning, organizing and 300 hours of physical labor, Christopher Kaufman reflects on the Eagle Scout project that took him over two years to accomplish.
“It definitely took up some of my free time this summer, but it was worth it.”
From conception to completion, Chris planned every detail of the renovation which included raising the funds, doubling the size of the display area, adding closet style areas, bins and shelving, installing counters, repainting, and waxing the floors.
And the employees are grateful too! “It’s wonderful. The goal was to give people the feeling of being in a boutique and Chris has more than accomplished that”, said Maureen Mahr, Business Administrator for the Salvation Army.
Many people think the thrift stores are simply tangible donations but there’s more to the story. If you’d like to learn more about how the Salvation Army thrift stores benefit Adult Rehabilitation Centers, visit www.satruck.org.
