On any given day of the week, employees working in the back of a Salvation Army Family Store will sort through hundreds of donated items. And occasionally, items need to be scrubbed, repaired or lifted in some way in order to be resold at the front of the store.
At the Orange County, California Salvation Army Family Store, this is where “Band Aid” Mike comes in.

At 6’7 and 280 pounds, it’s difficult to imagine past NFL linebacker John Corker as “weak”. But for years, the one-time Green bay Packer was dominated by his own dependence on drugs all the while playing defense for various teams.
“I was probably smoking $1,200 a day and playing pro football at the same time,” he said. “How my heart didn’t burst, I can’t tell you that.”

Nominated by his boss, Lynn Kallgren, as a Salvation Army employee deserving recognition for his character and achievements, Keith Butler has worked tirelessly as a Data Entry Specialist for The Salvation Army Divisional Headquarters in San Diego for 17 years, all the while volunteering his time when the hours allow for it.
“He’ll actually work after church on Sunday all day so that he can take Friday off to ring bells at our red kettles,” Lynn said.
