The guys behind the band Honor Society have been on the road nonstop lately, performing at venues across the U.S. and Canada in support of The Salvation Army’s Red Kettle Campaign. They may be rocking out at night but in between concerts, the guys spend their days volunteering at various Salvation Army locations; serving food, washing dishes, and offering a listening ear to the less fortunate who rely on The Salvation Army for food, shelter and support each day.

While typical contributions to our red kettles usually involve dollars and coins, on occasion, one of our 25,000 volunteer bell ringers will receive a donation that stands out. We’re only eight days into The Salvation Army’s current Red Kettle Campaign and we’re already hearing stories about unique gifts from kettle passersby.

Actor and recording artist Robert Davi released his version of the holiday song, originally sung by 50’s crooner Frank Sinatra, in support of The Salvation Army. Every penny of Davi’s proceeds from the single will go directly towards The Salvation Army’s 120th Annual Red Kettle Campaign

With our Red Kettle Campaign officially kicking off yesterday, our annual Christmas tradition is in full swing. Starting today, thousands of faithful volunteer bell ringers standing outside of stores across the country, collecting donations for the millions of Americans in need. With a record number of families requesting help this year, we hope to exceed our collection goals so that we can continue providing the basic necessities for those who are struggling financially.
In light of Thanksgiving, we are so thankful for not only the volunteers that tirelessly ring bells for The Salvation Army, but also for the many stores that allow our kettles to be stationed outside of their door at this time each year.
When the kettle tradition was founded by Salvation Army Captain Joseph McFee in 1891, he sought out a location for his collection “pot” that would be well-trafficked. He chose the Oakland Ferry Landing in San Francisco so it could be seen by everyone going to and from the ferry boats. Today, our corporate partnerships provide just that – prime locations during the season of giving (and shopping!).

It’s not even Thanksgiving yet and Jeff “Jingle-Jangle” Olsen, of St. Paul, Minnesota is hardcore rockin’ his red kettle for The Salvation Army. The local broadcaster of KOOL 108 FM and Salvation Army volunteer is currently in first place at www.onlineredkettle.org, with a whopping $24,786.84 raised in donations so far!
Nearly a third of this amount was given by an anonymous donor who attended the Twin Cities Kettle Kickoff Event and handed Jeff a check for $8,000.

If that’s not enough, Jeff set a new world record for nonstop bell ringing for 30 hours straight outside of a local grocery store! Bear in mind, we’re talking about Minnesota in November here, folks.

It is my hope that anyone who feels as blessed as me will use my record-breaking stunt as inspiration to volunteer or make a donation to The Salvation Army this holiday season. We’re absolutely amazed at the love and dedication of our supporters across the country. The Salvation Army Red Kettle Campaign funds the many amazing programs that help millions in need throughout the year: feeding the hungry, providing Christmas joy for disadvantaged children, and blessing families in need.

If you’ve started to tackle your Christmas shopping, you’ve probably noticed our Salvation Army red kettles are out in full force. There’s going to be around 25,000 workers and volunteers this season collecting donations in front of your favorite stores.
This iconic tradition and vital fundraiser started in 1891 in San Francisco would not be the same without the generous support of the businesses who welcome Salvation Army bell ringers and kettles outside their doors.
Have you noticed that everyone you know recognizes a Salvation Army bell ringer and kettle? That’s because thanks to these businesses kindly sharing their space with us, we’ve been able to significantly raise awareness of need in your local community and our efforts to serve that need.
In fact, this broad visibility has contributed to The Salvation Army Red Kettle campaign being known as one of the most enduring and recognizable fundraising campaigns ever.
As if that weren’t enough, many of these stores even match kettle donations or contribute their own!

The Salvation Army is proud to announce the new Chairman of our National Advisory Board (NAB) is Mrs. Charlotte Jones Anderson, the Executive Vice President of Brand Management/President of Charities for the Dallas Cowboys!
Mrs. Anderson will be the first-ever female chairperson of our NAB and will serve a three-year term beginning January 2011, following the term ending of our current chairman Rob Pace.
Pace told the Dallas Morning News, “[Anderson] had unanimous support – we all thought she was the exact right person for this responsibility.”

Serving as NAB Chairman is just the next chapter in Mrs. Anderson’s distinguished history of involvement with the Army. She has been a member of the NAB for the past 5 years, helped create a memorable kickoff to our annual Christmas Red Kettle campaigns for the last 13 years through her organization of the nationally televised Dallas Cowboys Thanksgiving Day game half-time show, and she also frequently participates in events at The Salvation Army’s Gene and Jerry Jones Family Center for Children which provides affordable childcare for low-income families.
Having worked with the Dallas Cowboys for 21 years, Mrs. Anderson is one of the NFL’s most innovative and versatile executives. She guides the team in everything from stadium design to entertainment, merchandising, uniforms design, and philanthropy. It’s no wonder they lay claim to one of the most popular brands in sports! She also supervises the fortunes and travels of the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders – considered to be the most recognized and accomplished organization of its kind in the world.
The Salvation Army is confident that Mrs. Anderson’s support and experience with our organization, strong marketing background, and excellent vision displayed in guiding the Dallas Cowboys will help make her an excellent leader for our National Advisory Board!

The United States has been ranked as the world’s 5th most generous nation, according to the 2010 Gallup’s World Giving Index. Rankings were based on responses to survey questions about the frequency of charitable behavior including donating money, volunteering and helping strangers.
Here’s who took the other top spots (repeated numbers indicate a tie):

Coming from The Salvation Army’s perspective, we’re not surprised that the American public has a big heart – much of what we do hinges on the generosity of others. According to our 2010 National Annual Report, more than 3,411,613 Salvation Army volunteers donated their time and effort last year! And during the last two years’ holiday giving seasons, when the economic downturn suggested that financial donations should be on the decline, Americans gave more than ever before to our Annual Christmas Red Kettle Campaigns!
