Congratulations to Jim Cummings, the big winner of our Online Red Kettle contest!

Jim has won an expenses-paid trip to Dallas where he’ll be in the middle of all the Thanksgiving Day action straight from the seats of Cowboys Stadiums. That includes a rocking performance by Keith Urban during our Red Kettle Kickoff halftime show and a must-see match-up between the Dallas Cowboys and defending Super Bowl champs, the New Orleans Saints.

Of all individual online red kettles, Jim’s raised the most money, receiving donations all the way from Hong Kong, UK and Germany. Thanks Jim, for your work in helping raise funds to support Salvation Army services for those in need!

The Salvation Army’s Red Kettle Kickoff! The event marks the official launch of our Christmas fundraising campaign, and as always, we’re doing it up BIG!

We’re teaming up with the Dallas Cowboys (marking 14 years of partnership)to bring you an amazing halftime show during their Thanksgiving Day game versus the New Orleans Saints. Three-time Grammy Award winner Keith Urban will be the featured performer, rocking the stadium out with hits from his new album.

The Cowboys Game and Kettle Kickoff Halftime Show will air LIVE on FOX at 3:15CT/4:15ET.

So whether you’re gearing up for or winding down from your turkey dinner, be sure to tune in!

There was a lot of energy and excitement at the Rascal Flatts/JCPenney Angel Tree Toy Drive in Manhattan last week! Too many fans to count turned out with new toys for some lucky angels.

Rascal Flatts weaved in and out of the crowd to meet as many people as possible and sign copies of their new album. From the photos it looked like a scene from Where’s Waldo?

The evening’s climax came when toy drive partners JCPenney (represented by VP Rick Jones), Rascal Flatts, and The Salvation Army (represented by Major George Hood) took the stage to share what a positive impact the program would have on children and seniors in need. They thanked the audience for their generous support.

When Major Hood returned from NYC, I asked him about his thoughts on the event and our partners. His response was very encouraging.

“They’re so committed to these kids. It’s really refreshing to work with a retailer who wants to make sure kids are cared for,” he noted.

“This is a corporate partnership where the people involved really are focused on meeting the needs of children – making sure kids have Christmas presents is more important to JCPenney and Rascal Flatts than any recognition they’re going to get.”

The sour green character known for a “heart two sizes too small” was spotted in Omaha this weekend, but surprisingly, he wasn’t there to put a stop to Christmas festivities – he actually helped kick things off.

The Salvation Army of Omaha launched their Tree of Lights Campaign on Friday, and the Grinch himself flipped the switch to light the massive shining tree.

The money raised by the Campaign each holiday season funds a range of Salvation Army services in the Omaha area throughout the year, benefiting families, children, the homeless, seniors, and disaster survivors.

Multi-platinum country music band Rascal Flatts’ latest album officially hits stores today. If you’re trying to decide where to buy your copy of ‘Nothing Like This,’ may we offer some information to help make it easier for you?

Shopping the Most Good at Target

Not that some of us out there need any additional incentive to go shopping, but this week Target has a promotion that makes it pretty hard to resist.

For each Target gift card of $20 or more purchased in store from Sunday, Nov. 14 – Saturday, Nov. 20, Target will donate $1 to The Salvation Army (up to $400,000 total).

It’s a good way for you to knock out some holiday shopping and a great way to give back to your local community. Plus, can you imagine the look on Aunt Sue’s face when she finds out her awesome present is also helping serve people in need?

The Salvation Army is thankful for Target’s generosity, and we hope you’ll let them know how much their efforts are appreciated next time you stop in their stores.

As our iconic red kettles are already appearing on streets and by store fronts, Major Hood talked about how the money raised from this holiday tradition is critical in supporting local Army programs and services year round.

A Paper Angel, A Country Star

Country music star Jimmy Wayne will be performing in Nashville tonight at the ‘A Gathering of Angels Benefit Concert’ to promote our Salvation Army Angel Giving Tree program.

As an advocate of Angel Tree, Jimmy’s doing more than just promoting a good cause. He knows from personal experience the incredible hope it provides to those in need.

Jimmy survived a turbulent childhood and bounced around from foster home to foster home with his sister before ending up on the streets. During those difficult years they were also adopted angels, receiving Christmas presents from kind, anonymous donors through the Angel Tree program. The gifts were a source of cheer amidst an otherwise dark time.

The experience was so important to him that it inspired his 2004 hit song “Paper Angels,” referring to the angel shaped tags which represent the Christmas wishes of children and seniors up for “adoption.”

I wonder, did Jimmy ever imagine that one day he would be on the other side serving as a voice for a program from which he once received support? I don’t know, but the generosity of others certainly resulted in a life-changing impact on the course of his life (while a homeless teenager, an elderly couple adopted him for real and set him on the course for college and a music career).

Salvation Army Bell Ringer Sets a World Record

A Salvation Army captain is the newest name to go down in the Guinness Book of World Records! Captain Ken Chapman from The Salvation Army’s Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi Division set the record for continuous bell-ringing for 30 hours, 5 minutes, and 50 seconds, breaking the previous record of 28 hours and 50 minutes set in Canada. Congratulations!

But the stunt was more than just about having his name go down in history. Dressed in his Salvation Army uniform with his hand bell and a Red Kettle close by, Captain Chapman’s goal was to recruit more bell-ringing volunteers and raise awareness of the great need in his local community.

In fact, Salvation Army units across the country are looking for volunteer bell ringers. If Captain Chapman can ring a bell for more than a day straight, we’re sure some folks out there can do it for an hour or two!

Please contact your local Salvation Army to learn more about how you can sign up to be a Christmas bell ringer. We can always use more.

In the meantime, Captain Chapman is giving his arms a rest while he waits for his record to be certified by Guinness World Record officials in London.
