Easter is a blessed reminder from God that our hope and assurance rest in the promise of our salvation through His son’s sacrifice on the cross. Just as spring season undoubtedly displays new life each year, so we are renewed in our redemption and new life in Christ’s name each day.

In light of Good Friday tomorrow, we are pleased to share a message from Salvation Army International Leader, General Linda Bond. Happy Easter to you!

The Gentle Invitation to Believe
by General Linda Bond

Time changes one’s perspective, does it not? That is so for me and perhaps for many of you when you reflect on the Easter story. Maybe it has to do with our life experiences which make us see things differently. Or maybe the gracious way the Lord has dealt with us has taught us to read the Scriptures differently. Whatever the cause, the account of Thomas’s reaction on hearing that Jesus was risen illustrates this point for me…Continue Reading

40 Days of Sacrifice

Wednesday, March 9, 2011

Today is the first day of the Lenten season. If you observe this religious tradition, have you decided what you’ll sacrifice for this time leading up to Easter?

Most people I know stick to one thing to abstain from for these 40 days, like chocolate or playing video games. But Kathleen See in The Salvation Army’s Eastern Territory posted her own idea for Lent. For her, each day is a new opportunity to either give something up or do something good for others.

Below is her calendar for the first week of Lent. Maybe you can use this as a guide for your own plans. View Kathleen’s full list here.

March 9 Give up watching TV
March 10 Give up drinking your favorite hot drink
March 11 Learn a Bible verse
March 12 Give up the trip to the mall
March 13 Invite someone to Sunday dinner
March 14 Go to bed an hour earlier and use the time to pray
March 15 Cut your spending by $10 this week and put it in a box and decide what person in need will receive it at end of Lent season.

Happy Easter

Thursday, April 1, 2010

Do you have plans yet for Easter? Consider celebrating or supporting your community through events being held by The Salvation Army during this sacred weekend.

Units across the country will be holding sunrise (or “Sonrise”) services on Sunday, April 3 that community members are invited and encouraged to attend! Contact your local Salvation Army community center for more information about what’s going on near you. Here are just a few different types of events and services that The Salvation Army has planned:

San Francisco’s 88th annual Easter Sunrise Service at Mt. Davidson Cross, located atop the city’s highest peak, will take place Sunday at 7AM. The free, citywide nondenominational event will feature the talented Salvation Army Brass Ensemble, along with musical performances by a bagpiper, gospel singer, and youth choir. It will be a beautiful scene of worship as gatherers of diverse backgrounds and denominations join at the foot of our nation’s largest cross in honor of the sacrifice and resurrection.

Many other Salvation Army units will be holding sunrise or regular Sunday services, with some even hosting a breakfast. The Men’s Club of Salvation Army Battle Creek, Michigan are cooking their annual Sonrise Breakfast with pancakes, eggs, sausage, juice, milk and coffee, and The Salvation Army in Tucson, Arizona is collecting ham, eggs, potatoes, and pastries for the 600 people in need they plan to serve.

Other activities are spread throughout the week, such as a Saturday Easter Carnival being thrown by The Salvation Army in Waco, TX, and an Easter Egg Hunt being held in Bloomington Indiana, also on Saturday.

Do you know anyone in need of an Easter outfit? Our community center in Macomb County, Michigan is holding their annual Dress an Angel Program on Friday that lets children choose a dress, skirt or pant outfit.

And Easter baskets donated by churches, businesses, and organizations will be auctioned off by The Salvation Army in eastern Pennsylvania to raise money for the uninsured to help pay for their prescriptions.

Hopefully you can find some way to worship or be involved on this holy holiday. Happy Easter!
