A new paint job can completely revitalize a room and, depending on the color scheme, enhance your mood. If only painting wasn’t so much work!

Representatives from the Sherwin Williams company in Erie, PA surely know the pains of painting large rooms. But that didn’t stop them from doing the most good at The Salvation Army in Erie, PA last week when they gave a colorful face lift to the building’s interior.

Groundhog Day and Other Weird News

Wednesday, February 2, 2011

Straight from Gobbler’s Knob this morning, the world’s most famous groundhog Punxsutawney Phil has predicted an early spring! The winter-weary, and especially those impacted by this week’s blizzard, are probably rejoicing at the news – that is, if you put any stock in the forecast of a rodent.

However, there are some out there savoring what’s left of this bitterly cold season. Just a few hours east of Punxsutawney in Williamsport, PA, The Salvation Army held its Second Annual Polar Bear Plunge on Saturday. About 100 people dove in to the icy Susquehanna River, and about 500 more shivered as they watched from dry ground. Some of the plungers even came in costume, reportedly dressed for dunking in prom gowns, tuxedo garb, and even a buffalo headdress.

Weird? Absolutely, but it was all for a good cause. The local Salvation Army says they raised more than $5,000 as a result of the Polar Bear Plunge, which will go to support community programs, especially those benefitting youth.

Fun fact for the Day: Punxsutawney Phil has seen his shadow 98 times and hasn’t seen it 16 times since 1887.

Introducing Garbage Bag Couture

Friday, November 5, 2010

Go to your closet and pick out your nicest dress. Now throw it on the floor because you can’t be caught dead in that at tonight’s event hosted by The Salvation Army of Pittsburgh.

Forget sequins and silk. Trash bags are all the rage this evening at The 9th Annual Garbage Bag Gala where you’ll find “Pittsburgh’s classiest guys and girls” gathered for “this season’s trashiest event.”

The gala is a unique fundraiser to raise money for homeless families living at The Salvation Army’s East Liberty Family Caring Center. Instead of spending money on a new outfit, partygoers donate the funds to The Salvation Army where they’ll be used to support family center residents. Oh ya, and as a fun twist, attendees create evening attire out of plastic garbage bags!

For more information, find the Gala on Facebook (The 2010 Garbage Bag Gala) or visit their website at garbagebaggala.com.

Honor Society In Nashville, “Doing the Most Good” as National Tour Wraps Up

Friday, May 7, 2010

Honor Society, the popular new band that we’ve partnered with the last few months, is wrapping up their national Here Comes Trouble tour with a show tonight in Nashville and a concert tomorrow in Atlanta tomorrow, May 8.

***If you’re in the Nashville area and able to make it out to the concert at Rocketown tonight, please bring nonperishable food items! Alex, Andrew, Michael, and Jason are holding a food drive to benefit the local Salvation Army food pantry, and you can help them in “doing the most good!” ***

Honor Society has done an INCREDIBLE job of supporting Salvation Army programs across the country. They no doubt have a lot of things they are doing as they enjoy their national tour, but we very much appreciate that they’re also making it a priority to give back to communities along the way and encouraging their fans to do the same!

Check out the most recent clips the band recorded of their time in Allentown, Pennsylvania; Washington, DC; and Cleveland, Ohio.

Allentown, PA (April 29): Honor Society served dinner to excited kids at the Community Center, and in a slight role reversal, the band was the audience to some children eager to show off their talents!

Washington, DC (April 26): The guys visited the Washington, DC Salvation Army’s Harbor Light Center and had a soulful jam session with the choir.
