It’s Always Sunny Here Thanks to Walmart Volunteers

Thursday, July 14, 2011

The Salvation Army Community Center in West Philadelphia is getting a much needed makeover, thanks to an all hands on deck volunteer effort by Walmart.

The project is part of the Walmart Foundation’s 5-year, $2 billion commitment to fight hunger in the U.S. with food donations, $250 million in grants at the national and local levels, and collaboration with government and non-profit organizations to reach more families in need.

300 Philadelphia-area Walmart volunteers are working this week to complete the renovation, which includes cleaning, painting, installation of new fixtures, artwork and shelving, and food and clothing donations. The volunteers are specifically focusing on updating the community center’s public spaces and food service/emergency response areas.

The Salvation Army is incredibly grateful for this support that will benefit individuals and families in need!

Visit The Salvation Army Philadelphia’s Facebook page (Salvation Army Philadelphia) and Twitter feed (@SalArmyPhilly) for project updates, and find more photos updated daily at Walmart Philadelphia’s page.

Philadelphia Kroc Center Opening Saturday – And You’re Invited!

Friday, October 15, 2010

You’re invited to celebrate with The Salvation Army of Philadelphia this Saturday, October 16 at the ribbon cutting of their new Ray and Joan Kroc Corps Community Center! It’s the 9th center to open in the United States as a result of Mrs. Kroc’s generous gift in 2004, and it’s expected to double the Salvation Army’s social service impact in Philly, serving 750-1,000 people per day.

After the 1:30pm ribbon cutting, there will be a dedication ceremony, self-guided tours and free concert, along with the Center’s first worship service Sunday morning. They’re not wasting any time in opening their doors to the public, and after seeing the Kroc’s construction photos, we can’t WAIT to see the final product!

And yes, the Center will be awesome. The three-pool Aquatic Center, two-story state-of-the art fitness center, multi-sport athletic field and community garden don’t even begin to describe all the amenities and opportunities the Kroc will offer Philadelphians. Plus, it’s going to create more than 400 jobs and $22 million in economic impact annually. I can’t think of a reason not to be excited!

We hope you can make it Saturday, and if not, find more information (and there’s a lot more interesting information that we can’t fit into this blog), visit www.SalvationArmyKrocCenter.org.

You can also find ongoing updates at The Salvation Army’s Philadelphia Kroc Center page on Facebook (www.facebook.com/SalvationArmyPhiladelphia) and Twitter (www.twitter.com/SalArmyPhilly).

Phildelphia Eagles Doing the Most Good – Come Help Them!

Friday, May 21, 2010

We’ve been posting a lot recently about our partnering with hunger relief organization Numana, Inc. to host community meal packing events around the country for Haiti earthquake survivors. Yes, even four months after the disaster, much help is still needed and will continue to be needed for a long time.

Today, May 21, and tomorrow, May 22, volunteers will gather in Philadelphia at Drexel University to help The Salvation Army prepare 1 million meals. We we will ship and distribute the food to the 20,000 displaced Haitians that we are caring for in Port-au-Prince. We’re looking for 5,000 volunteers to make this possible, so if you want to get involved, register online at www.SalvationArmyPhiladelphia.org. We need your help!!

And we think it’s pretty cool that the Philadelphia Eagles are partnering with us for this event! This afternoon Eagles guard and Haiti native Max Jean-Gilles, Eagles linebacker Akeem Jordan and Eagles employees will be volunteering in our effort to provide nutritious meals to earthquake survivors.

Come out and lend a hand for a few hours while making a big difference in the lives of those in need. Here are some important links for more information including the event’s address and important FAQ:
