In recent years, Salvation Army bell ringers have attempted to bring a little pizzazz into their kettle duties in order to spur interest and donations. You might remember the tiny bell ringing horse from last year or Elvis himself manning a red kettle!

Bell Ringers slowed their bells and officially closed down their red kettles as The Salvation Army’s 120th annual Red Kettle Campaign wrapped up on Christmas Eve at stores nationwide. While most bell ringers closing up shop were volunteers, there were some who rang the bells for temporary income.

Among the paid bell ringers was Lynn and Rusty Smith of Ventura, California, first time ringers who are currently down on their luck due to tough economic times.

Commissioner William A. Roberts, National Commander of The Salvation Army, decided to forego his lunch break today to ring bells at a red kettle location outside of Starbucks in Old Town Alexandria, VA.
Standing in the cold with a bell in one hand, a coffee occasionally in the other and always a grateful smile on his face, Commissioner Roberts wished passersby a Merry Christmas and offered a boisterous “thank you” to all who donated to the kettle.
