Sam’s Club Donates $500,000 to The Salvation Army!

Friday, September 23, 2011

Sam’s Club, a well-known retail warehouse club with locations nationwide, is a long-standing supporter of The Salvation Army and once again, they generously put forth their efforts at a local level to help us raise money.

For the last couple months, more than 150 of the participating clubs in the western division teamed up with their communities to support The Salvation Army- and they raised a whopping $488,383!

Fundraising methods varied by location but the creative juices were certainly flowing. Among the most inventive were on-site movie nights, bowling tournaments, garage sales, cookouts, dunk tanks, car shows, silent auctions, and bake sales. One location even built a jail cell that motivated managers to raise $50 to bail out their own employees!
Although the fundraising methods differed, you can be sure that every event took place on location.

After the campaign ended, Sam’s Club employees wanted to celebrate their efforts. Participants traveled from all over the western region to meet in Kansas City for a volleyball tournament. Players received coaching from special guest Misty Mae Treanor, Olympic gold medalist volleyball champ.

Sam’s Club Manager Works Tirelessly for Region’s Relief Efforts

Friday, May 27, 2011

While they may not be first responders or trained in disaster relief, community members have created opportunities to use their own unique skills to assist with recovery efforts.

One such person is Shane Dickerson, the Kansas and Missouri Market Manager for Sam’s Club and member of The Salvation Army’s Kansas City Advisory Board. He has worked tirelessly throughout the Joplin disaster to create a supply infrastructure that would permeate all areas of need across the region.

Dickerson has chosen to coordinate his efforts with the Fire Department Chief, the Red Cross and The Salvation Army.

“I sit on the Advisory Board in Kansas City, so I was incredibly excited to see The Salvation Army as the first organization on our door step asking for aid so they could respond,” said Dickerson. “They said they needed gloves, so we gave them every glove we had available – down to the gloves our butchers use to handle meat.”

Dickerson has salvaged what materials he is able from the now-demolished Walmart on Range Line Road, and has tapped the Sam’s Club supply chain to distribute Gatorade, water, shopping carts, baby clothing, diapers, and dust masks.

Dickerson and Sam’s Club continue to work to meet the needs of first responders and aid organizations responding to the crisis, and intend to provide aid throughout the crisis.

It’s a Record: $142 Million in Giving!

Wednesday, February 23, 2011

Thank you, America! The Salvation Army raised $142 million in Christmas Red Kettles during the 2010 season, setting a record for the sixth straight year!

This is great news considering how much more need we’ve seen across the country, and these funds will go to support our many programs year round.

Wow. It was a busy Red Kettle season, to say the least. We used many of our traditional efforts, from the volunteer bell ringers you probably saw on every corner, to our annual Thanksgiving Day Kickoff at Cowboys Stadium. Plus, we had a few new ideas up our sleeves, like our Rock the Red Kettle Concert and a new iPhone app.

When it all comes down to it, though, we couldn’t have done any of this without you. Thank you for your generosity. And thanks to our many corporate partners for your continued support. We’re very grateful for all of your help with assisting those in need!

If you’d like to know more about our record Red Kettle Season, check out our official press release here.

Thanks to Sam’s Club, Off the Field professional football players’ wives went on a shopping spree to help make the holidays brighter for 100 families in need across the country. They filled up carts full of food, clothes, personal items, electronics and toys for each deserving family. Football players’ wives shopping for Salvation Army families this year included Roxi McNabb in Washington, DC, Dotti Palmer in Cincinnati, Denise Clark in Chicago and Kimberly Alexander in Dallas.

Thank you to all Off the Field participants and Sam’s Club for making this year’s Dream Drive come true!
